Government of India is in a strict mood to stop SPAM messages, calls and fake news. Recently Government of India also send a notice to WhatsApp asking it to come out with effective solution to stop the fake news. Now on Thursday, 19 July, TRAI release a new rule in order to stop the SPAM calls and messages. TRAI, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is a statutory body set up by the Government of India. It regulates telecom networks in India.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a document entitled “Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation.” In this 113-page report TRAI stated that — “every access provider shall ensure, within six months’ time, that all smart-phone devices registered on its network support the permissions required for functioning of such apps” that can report SPAM calls and messages.
The report further adds, “Provided that where such devices do not permit functioning of such apps as prescribed in regulation access providers (mobile operators) shall, on the order or direction of the (telecom) authority, de-recognize such devices from their telecom networks.”
But what this all basically mean ? Through this 113-page report, TRAI order that every cell phone either it is running on iOS or on Android platform should have a TRAI-developed or TRAI-approved mobile application called DND that allows users to report SPAM calls and messages.
There are number of application out there which facilitates this functionality, even TRAI themselves have already developed a Do-Not-Disturb (DND) app which was launched in 2016, it is free for download.
Today in this world we daily come across lots of SPAM message and calls. We wonder that from where they get my cell phone number. This new rule of TRAI works on stooping this SPAN news and messages with the help of DND app. DND app provides users the ability to flag, which means to report telemarketing calls and messages.
Implementation of this rule is easy on Android platform. Android, has more loosely-created guidelines around the apps accessing private data of users. And there are already lots of DND app is available to Android users. Also Google’s has agreed to carry Trai’s do-not-disturb (DND) app on its device
But in term of iOS, Apple has a issue with this rule. Apple reportedly does not want to allow this app on its platform. DND app requires certain permissions to access information on a users’ devise. Apple does not want that any third party application keep eye on there users activity. Apple see this as a violation of their customer’s privacy as the third party app would have the ability to read the customer’s call and message records. Apple are notoriously strict about this type of invasion of privacy.
If Apple does not comply with the latest TRAI regulations and continues to resist DND 2.0 app from TRAI, and not permit it entry in the iOS App Store it is possible that the TRAI may ask telecom companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Jio to delist and deregister the iPhone from their networks. Apple may lose access to 3G, 4G or even basic telecom network
There are possibilities that Apple’s upcoming upcoming iOS 12 might come with a DND application that allows users to report SPAM calls and messages. According a report Apple has filed a fresh proposal with the TRAI last month, offering an in-house solution, but the regulator has so far not agreed to that.
Apple has six months to come to a conclusion other wise network operators in India will be instructed to cease their mobile services on all iPhones.
Have a great day, Enjoy !
