Google PhD fellowship programme: Indian students can apply by April 15

The Google Ph.D. Fellowship program is conducted by Google to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields.

The fellowship recipient will be supported for a maximum period of four years with a monthly fellowship, a contingency grant for expenses like books, stationery, etc and a travel grant for attending conferences.

The applications for the Google Ph.D. Fellowship Programme are open for Indian students.

The last date to apply for the four-year fellowship is April 15, 2020. The students from Indian universities who have a major in computer science or related fields are eligible to apply.

Every fellowship recipient will be assigned a Google Sponsor who will mentor the Ph.D. fellow over the research period. Engagement with the Sponsor will be on research direction, research progress updates, etc.

The fellowship students will research a wide range of topics like mobile computing, machine learning, human-computer interaction, system and networking, natural language processing and others.

The internship is also available at Google. Based on mutual interest between the fellowship recipient and Google Sponsor, the fellowship recipient can do an internship after successfully clearing the internship interview process. Note that the awarding of the fellowship does not guarantee a Google internship.

In some cases, the fellowship recipients are eligible for scholarships like Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, Google Scholarship for Students with Disabilities.

The students who are recognized as Google researchers are eligible for a monetary award or stipend. In addition, Google extends funding to the universities of the selected candidates for student expenses including travel and research-related activities. The total fund cover is $50,000 (₹3.6 million).

The applicants are shortlisted on the basis of their research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. This includes the assessment of innovative concepts in the research, impact, and direction of work. The research should align with Google AI’s principal.
