Elon Musk the high profile CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX has now came up another innovation. Boring Company’s CEO Elon Musk has won the bid to build a high-speed express train to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The company wins over Mott MacDonald, the civil engineering firm which is responsible for designed a terminal at London’s Heathrow Airport, and JLC Infrastructure.
Emanuel’s administration has selected Boring Company from four competing bids to build high-speed transportation tunnel between downtown and the airport. This has given company a big boost in confidence as it tries to get transportation projects underway in Los Angeles and Washington. The official announcement about the City of Chicago awarding the contract to the Boring Company would be made Thursday by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Musk, but the company provided details on its website.
The design of network will be based on Musk’s Loop concept — “a high-speed underground public transportation system in which passengers are transported on autonomous electric skates traveling at 125-150 miles per hour.” 40 minutes traveling time is going to reduces upto 12 minutes. The new rail line will see 12-minute trips in electric vehicles called “skates,” from the airport’s new terminals to the Block 37 super-station downtown. This trip usually takes approximately 30-40 minutes, whether by train via Chicago’s Blue Line, or by cab.
Skates will leave each station early about at 30 seconds, operating 20 hours per day, seven days a week. Passengers will hop into an 8 to 16-seat vehicle travelling at about 150 miles per hour through The Boring Company’s 12-feet-wide tunnels. Single passenger vehicles will also be available, but no other information has been provided on this. The city is expected to announce the news as soon as Thursday, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly.
There no official announcement about the fares; according to Company, fares have not been finalized, but “will be less than half the typical price of taxi/ride-share services, though higher than the Blue Line”. The Blue Line subway is about 15 miles and takes about 40 minutes and $5, and if you by a taxi it would usually cost something between $25 and $30.
How much the project will cost ?
It is not yet known how much the whole project will cost, but according to the Chicago Sun Times, The Boring Company says it can install the whole thing, including the Block 37 renovation and the new airport station that for under $1 billion. The Boring Company says the project will be 100 percent privately funded. In return, it would make money from not only the sale of tickets — likely priced at $20-25 each — but also from advertising spots and branding inside the vehicles. For The Boring Company things aren’t going to be easy, it will going to be a great challenge for Musk which he love most.
